In the spring of 2010, Grandpa Larry became very sick and spent over 100
days in the hospital. After an extensive surgery in May 2010, he woke
up without any vision and has not had his sight return since then.
During this time, he and his wife of four years divorced and my mom
moved in to help him adjust to life without sight.
After
graduating in May 2011, I (Kiki) moved in with Grandpa Larry and Mom
returned to her home. Grandpa still needs assistance with navigating.
It's hard to imagine feeling lost in the house you've lived in for over
30 years, but I see it everyday.
He has his ups and downs and
talks frequently about what he'd do if he gets his vision back -- an
event that doctors say will never happen. While we want to believe that
his "1 in a million" odds are pretty good and that we just need to
wait, we'll keep each other company with laughter, the Brewers, the
Packers, the Badgers, Everybody Loves Raymond, Cheers, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Judge Judy, and Fox News.
